Trinity College’s Muslim Life Program and Muslim Students Association (MSA) recently welcomed students, alumni, faculty, staff, families, and friends from local Muslim groups to a Community Iftar Dinner, in observation of the month of Ramadan.
Osman Simsek, director of Muslim life, said that the March 3 event in the Washington Room was an opportunity for the whole Trinity community to come together, share a meal, and experience the spirit of Ramadan in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Iftar is the meal that breaks the fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan, Simsek said. “However, fasting during Ramadan is not just about refraining from eating and drinking; it encompasses abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset,” he said. “It is a time for Muslims to purify their hearts and minds, engage in deep spiritual reflection, and cultivate a sense of empathy for those who are less fortunate.” At sunset, Muslims gather for Iftar to mark the end of their fast for the day, sharing a meal with family and community.
Simsek added that the Community Iftar Dinner at Trinity was held to help foster a greater sense of connection and understanding of different cultures and religious practices. “It also opens the door for interfaith dialogue, providing an opportunity for people of different religious backgrounds to learn more about the spiritual significance of Ramadan,” he said. “Additionally, this Iftar created a space for Muslim students to experience the warmth of Ramadan while away from home, ensuring they feel supported and connected to their faith during this important time.”
