Students will explore one or more library databases and learn what a database is and what it is not, develop search terms, and filter results to their advantage. They will understand the differences between a library database and Google searching.
Objectives:
- Find and access database(s)
- Search database(s) effectively and find sources
- Use filters to narrow results
- Explain the difference between web resources (i.e. Google) and library database resources
- Find permalinks to access the resource in the future
- Save & download resources
Sample In-Class Activities
- Demo search by librarians
- On results screen, show facets for limiting by source, date etc., finding full-text when not available
- Discuss importance of permanent or stable URLs.
- Students search databases with their own keywords and search terms
- Group discussions
