Students will explore one or more library databases and learn what a database is and what it is not, develop search terms, and filter results to their advantage. They will understand the differences between a library database and Google searching.

Objectives:

  • Find and access database(s)
  • Search database(s) effectively and find sources
  • Use filters to narrow results
  • Explain the difference between web resources (i.e. Google) and library database resources
  • Find permalinks to access the resource in the future
  • Save & download resources

Sample In-Class Activities

  • Demo search by librarians
  • On results screen, show facets for limiting by source, date etc., finding full-text when not available
  • Discuss importance of permanent or stable URLs.
  • Students search databases with their own keywords and search terms
  • Group discussions
