Among the faces assembled at the Koeppel Community Sports Center on the morning of Wednesday, August 28 were 547 members of the Class of 2028, culled from 7,615 applications. They joined faculty and staff for the President’s Convocation and Matriculation Ceremony at 9:30 a.m., marking the official start of the academic year.
The College received about 1,100 more applications this year than last. Most incoming students hail from the United States, representing 35 U.S. states. Nearly half the class—284 students—are New Englanders. Another 64 students are from nations around the world including Armenia, Botswana, India, Lebanon, New Zealand, Peru, Serbia, and Sri Lanka.
Among the U.S. students, nearly 31 percent are students who identify as a race other than white. Thirty-five percent were recruited to represent the Bantams with their athletic prowess. Overall, there are almost an equal number of women and men.
The new class includes 10 Posse Scholars, 7 Presidential Scholars, and 31 Arches Scholars. In addition, 35 students are 1823 Scholars, and 20 students come to Trinity from United World Colleges around the world.
Significantly, about 17 percent—91 students—are the first in their family to attend college. Nearly three-quarters of the Class of 2028 applied for financial aid, and more than half—59 percent—had a demonstrated need.
In addition to the new first-year students are 17 transfer students and 2 students in Trinity’s Individualized Degree Program (IDP), which welcomes those who are at least 24 years old or self-supporting.
This year, the academic ceremony occurs during orientation week for new students. Classes start Tuesday, September 3.
