The City of Vienna

Vienna is the capital of Austria and known as the “City of Music”. It is the 6th largest European city and is home to roughly 1.9 million people, 200,000 of which are students studying at one of the local universities.

Known for: Opera, Viennese coffee houses, art museums and home to many historical figures such as Sigmund Freud and Mozart.

Where is Vienna, Austria: Vienna is located in Central Europe with easy access to some of Europe’s most recognizable cities such as Rome, Paris and London. Austria is a landlocked country in the center of Europe with eight neighboring countries including Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic. The city of Vienna is located on the east coast of Austria, just a short trip to its eastern neighboring countries of Hungary and Slovakia. Austria is known as a very mountainous country, being located primarily in the Alps mountain range, however the eastern part of the country is much flatter. The entire country of Austria is roughly the size of the state of Maine or South Carolina.

 


Getting Around Vienna

Metro: Trinity in Vienna students receive a metro pass for the duration of the program. The metro pass gives students access to the Metro (U-Bahn) and Tramway networks across the entire city. The metro system includes 5 underground lines, 29 tram and 127 bus lines. There are metro stations next to the student dorms and university, providing easy access to the city and academic buildings.

Walking: Vienna is a very walk-able city. Students regularly walk to class, restaurants and cultural activities throughout the city.

Bike: Vienna is bike friendly.

Museums of Vienna

Vienna has more than 100 museums. These include important collections of world renown as well as small establishments that impress with original exhibits. Some of the most important museums are: Naturhistorisches Museum Vienna (Natural History Museum), Albertina (fine art/modern), Leopold Museum (modern art), Freud Museum, The Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art History Museum), Kunsthalle (modern art), Austrian National Library, Mozarthaus (Mozart’s Vienna House), etc.

Coffee houses

The University of Vienna Campus and Facilities

Trinity in Vienna is based at the University of Vienna which is centrally located in the heart of the city.

There are a variety of canteens, cafes and cafeterias at the University of Vienna where students can get food, coffee and snacks through out the day.

Students have the option to join the University Sports Institute (USI) (Registration fees included in the cost of the program). At the USI students can join sports clubs, take fitness classes and use the fitness facilities through out the city.

The University has large libraries and computer labs where students regularly spend their time studying, researching and completing course work.

Gerhard Unterthurner – On-Site Director and Philosophy Lecturer at the University of ViennaGerhard

Gerhard Unterthurner studied philosophy at the University of Vienna, Austria, and the University of Bochum, Germany. He received his M.A. and Ph.D from the University of Vienna. He is a faculty member in the Philosophy Department of the University of Vienna.

Gerhard has been the Trinity in Vienna On-Site Director since it opened in 2005.

 

Erik Vogt – Gwendolyn Miles Smith Professor of Philosophy, Trinity College and Dozent of Philosophy, University of Vienna

Professor Erik Vogt is a Gwendolyn Miles Smith Professor of Philosophy at Trinity College. Professor Vogt teaches at the University of Vienna each spring at the conclusion of Trinity’s semester, offering the philosophy core course during this time. He received his Habilitation from the University of Vienna, and is very familiar with Vienna, the university, and its faculty and staff, especially its Department of Philosophy. View full bio>>
