Subject-Based Tutoring Center
Who We Are
The Subject-Based Tutoring Center, formerly known as the Peer Tutoring Network, works with students across all areas of study to develop understanding and support student learning outside of the classroom.
We are committed to engaging with students in an inclusive, diverse, and safe learning environment, in which we believe we can all be successful learners.
What We Do
Our goal is to provide academic support to students across campus to improve their understanding of many concepts and overall attitude towards learning. We hold subject-based tutoring hours Sunday through Thursday from 7-9pm, where students may find help from peer tutors for specified courses and subjects.
The SBTC, Subject-Based Tutoring Center, does not offer tutoring for subjects offered through other centers. Students may schedule an appointment with one of our tutors online. We may not be able to fulfill all subject-tutoring requests, as tutors may not be available for all courses.
Working with a Subject-Based Tutor
- Connect key concepts from class and those in the textbook
- Assistance in grasping the underlying concepts of class topics and/or the methodology for problem-solving
- Enhance your understanding and comfort level with course concepts
- Subject-Based Tutors help you understand the concepts behind problems, and/or the process of solving problems. You are expected to come to your tutoring session with specific questions about concepts. Your tutors will not assist you with work on take-home exams, problem sets, or solve homework problems directly. Improper assistance is a violation of the Honor Code.
- At your first meeting, identify the goals for what you want to get out of your tutoring sessions with your Subject-Based Tutor and define your general session schedule to include days, times, and location.
- Come prepared with specific questions and bring all relevant materials (text books, syllabus, notes, etc.)
- Be on time for your sessions! If you must cancel a session, please do so as soon as possible on the WCOnline portal.
